Masahiro Nitta has been called “the greatest shamisen player in the world”. Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1984, Nitta plays the Tsugaru shamisen. This three-stringed folk instrument resembling a banjo, and is known for the flashy, quick-fingered Tsugaru style historically employed to gather crowds at festivals. Nitta began playing the shamisen at age 14 and was dominating national tournaments by age 16. He has performed in the U.S., throughout Asia, and even Saudi Arabia at the request of the Saudi King. Other appearances include a starring role in the film Three Stringed Samurai and Carnegie Hall’s Japan NYC with Conductor Seiji Ozawa.

On the occasion of the Portland Japanese Garden’s 50th Anniversary and in honor of the Portland Art Museum’s Samurai exhibition, Masahiro Nitta performs live with his new trio Wacocoro Brothers including wadaiko drummer Shinta, and DJ Tsuyoshi Takashiro.
