First up, STG welcomes Master Musicians from India and Pakistan, renowned Indian violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam, and Fareed Ayaz with Abu Muhammad.
A childhood violin prodigy, Subramaniam has been called “the God of Indian violin” and conquers all of his audiences with elegance and style. In addition to performing Carnatic Music and Western Classical Music, Subramaniam has also composed for and conducted major orchestras, scored for films, and has collaborated with a wide range of some of the greatest and most well known musicians from many different genres of music, including jazz, world music, and global fusion. Carnatic music is the traditional classical music of South India and he’s taken his style to every corner of the world, from Iceland to South Africa to the U.S. Dr. Subramaniam performs with his son Ambi Subramaniam, and accompanied by multiple South Indian percussionists.
Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad are two of the world’s foremost authorities of Qawwali, a traditional form of Sufi devotional music with roots that stretch back more than 700 years. Ayaz started his training in classical music at a tender age under the rigorous and critical tutelage of his late father Ustad Raziuddin, who himself was an outstanding classical musician and a recipient of the Pakistan President’s Pride of Performance medal. Ayaz and Muhammad have total mastery over various genres of classical music and blend them all together for a performance of Qawwali Sufi music that is rivaled by none.
Together, with Dr. L. Subramaniam, these masters of their crafts will deliver their highly skilled and unique take on an art form that has defined cultures and captivated audiences for centuries.
From the Ukraine, fusing their Ukrainian sound and folklore with accompanied instrumentations from across the globe, including Australia, Africa, Russia, and the Middle East, Ukarainian quartet DakhaBrakha brings their compelling multicultural sound referred to as “ethnic chaos” to the Neptune Theatre on Saturday, September 26th.
For over a decade, DakhaBrakha has blown away their audiences with amazing performances that are as much visual eye candy as they are a sonic marvel. DakhaBrakha creates their unique and unparalleled sound by showcasing their powerful vocal ranges and harmonies and blending it with rhythms derived from a multitude of different cultures.
Created and formed in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by avant-garde theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi, DakhaBrakha is deeply rooted in theatre and their scenic stage show stands out just as energetically as their music. Together, DakhaBrakha’s performances are both a sonic and visual tour de force that astonishes their audiences and inspires “cultural and artistic liberation”.
