Most people in Seattle are well aware of that big yellow monstrosity called the Solar Pioneer that rolled into Seattle a few weeks ago and is currently double-parked at Terminal 5. Activists have came out and protested in many different ways; On land the activists have made their wishes known as well with protests and marches, while out on the water they have used kayaks, canoes and even a floating barge ironically called the Solar Polar Pioneer that is parked a few hundreds from the shore near West Seattle’s Don Armeni park. From the barge you can easily see the drill rig with Mount Rainier in the distance providing a stark contrast.
On Friday June 5, that barge served as a concert stage with some very talented local musicians including Sol, Wanz and Amos Miller’s incredible collective called Love City Love. The Amos Miller led troupe dished out a beautiful mix of music that included everything from hip-hop, electronic beats, soul and jazz. They are definitely exceptional musicians. Next up was Michael “Wanz” Wansley who warmed up the crowd of kayakers and land-lubbers first with “Thrift Shop”, followed by a set full of his own music that heavily leans on soul and allows him to show-off his great baritone voice. Globe-trotting Hip-hop artist and Seattle native Sol finished the crowd off with an epic set that included a jump off the barge(and into the water) in recognition of his song “Jump In”.
