Canadian born and current Seattle transplant MIKE EDEL is set to release his finest and most mature work to date – India, Seattle – on October 16, 2015. Edel’s third album finds the songwriter delving deep into his personal experiences and will be released via Canadian-based Cordova Bay Records in conjunction with ILS/Caroline.
EDEL’s first single, “Blue Above the Green” is already impacting at AAA radio with early adds from New Jersey’s WBJB, Wisconsin’s WBSD and KBCS in Seattle, WA. Five tracks from India, Seattle have been added to “The Loft” on Sirius/XM where it reached #3 on their weekly playlist.
After a relentless, yet life-affirming, tour of nearly four years, EDEL returned to his Victoria, BC home in 2014 to changes in the formerly-familiar music and production scene. However, once back within the wood-walls and vintage analog recording gear studio of Juno-winning producer Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan), the two collaborated to create the very musical mirror-image of EDEL, ultimately producing India, Seattle.
Throughout the album, Edel’s lyrics invite the listener to share in his personal and most intimate life experiences. On “Julia”, the chorus splits the meandering details of a relationship with “I know it’s only two weeks in Calgary,” while emotionally communicating that it’s actually going to be much longer. In one of the most emotionally charged moments of the record during “Thought about July,” Edel paints an image of an island of separation, – “I thought an island was far enough away, you called me on the weekend, you wanted me to stay.”EDEL elaborates further on this theme during “East Shore West Shore”, proclaiming, “You can blame in on the vast expanse, to the cold prairie towns but you just can’t.”
There’s something about the way EDEL presents personal experiences; he projects a universal understanding of love and beauty, pain and confusion, the knowledge that all precious things are only precious because they can be lost. It feels a little bit like growing up – like the moment when everything that felt so close as a young person is all of a sudden so far away. It’s the comfort in finding that you aren’t alone. There’s a humanity in these discoveries, and listening to India, Seattle feels like taking part as EDEL discovers it for himself.
