Singer Songwriter Matt Costa Starts 2016 On the Road in the NW, Tobias the Owl to Open
After an ambitious goal of writing, producing and releasing 5 EP’s in 2015, Huntington Beach, CA based singer songwriter extraordinaire, Matt Costa is starting 2016 on the road in the Pacific Northwest with concert dates Friday January 8th at the Alberta Rose Theatre in Portland and Saturday January 9th at the Pilgrim Church on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Seattle’s Tobias the Owl will be the opener.
A creative, clever and successful songwriter, Costa has recorded 6 EP’s and 5 LP’s and had his songs placed in major films, TV and advertisements. Costa’s 12-year career has been fueled by his appeal as a live performer. He has toured with Jack Johnson in the USA and Europe and opened for Modest Mouse, Oasis, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals and Death Cab for Cuties among others.
With three EP’s already released in 2015, Eucalyptus in February featuring breezy, acoustic fingerpicking, the garage-rock bedroom recordings of Cat Mosta in July, the studio-recorded Neon Brain in early fall and with two more EP’s written and in the recording process, Costa was asked what the impetus was behind this creative explosion:
“It’s more of an exercise in writing songs and pushing myself to have a goal. I’m always writing different kinds of songs in whatever the moment may be, and a lot of times I don’t know where to put them. It’s easier to start placing them in these smaller batches than thinking of a big full-length record like I’ve always done. And so I thought, ‘Why don’t I put them out like that, and let it be what it is and not have the pressure of a big record?’ It’s more revealing of the creative process.”
Elijah Dhawan known as Tobias the Owl, opening the Portland and Seattle shows, is also prolific songwriter and active performer. Named best Singer Songwriter at the 2014 Toronto Independent Music Awards, his 2015 EP Painting Zeroes by Your Name has appeared on Seattle Blogger 2015 Top 10 lists and he is completing a new album for release in early 2016.
