Concert Review: John Mayall at Jazz Alley

John Mayall

Concert Review: John Mayall
Venue: Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, Seattle
Date: July 16, 2015

The performance by John Mayall at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley was one of those bucket list shows for me. John Mayall, has been the main influence in the British Blues movement since the 1960’s. With his band The Bluesbreakers, he was a mentor to Eric Clapton (Cream), Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac) and Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones).

The John Mayall Band pumped out an impressive set of rocking blues on their opening night of this Seattle run, featuring Rocky Athas on electric guitar, Greg Rbaz on bass guitar and Jay Davenport on drums. John Mayall, know as “The Godfather of British Blues” played multiple instruments to lead his band with original songs and classic covers. Watching John Mayall sings the blues is really like nothing else. And the man can play, whether on his beautiful Gibson guitar, on the keyboards, or blowin’ the harmonica, John Mayall can rock a room.

Of note, Mayall did some great covers, one from Lionel Hampton tune and another by bluesman Jimmy Rogers. Throughout the evening, The John Mayall Band also performed several selections from their most recent album “A SPECIAL LIFE” including “Big Boy Playboy”.

All in all it was a rockin’ set to open a four-night run at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley. Don’t miss your opportunity to catch one of the real legends of the blues.
