Concert Review: The Hunts / Panic Is Perfect

Going into the Crocodile Café to check out a couple of new bands on tour is always fun and exciting, even when you have no idea what’s going to happen. Honestly, other than hearing a few tracks online of the headliner, I went into this show with open ears.

Opening the evening from San Francisco was Panic Is Perfect and they completely blew me away. They played a mixed bag of styles that included pop-rock along with some elements of jam-band thrown in. With some catchy beats and strong playing, Panic Is Perfect could really be one of those next breakout bands. Lots of energy and a great sound, I can see this band really gain some momentum as they continue to build their following.
The headliners for the evening were The Hunts from Chesepeake, Virginia. This seven-piece band of siblings was really something else. Crafting original indie rock folk music with wonderful harmonies and musicianship. To say that these folks can play is an understatement. Between them all, several are multi-instrumentalists that impressed. At any given time one could be playing electric violin and then switch over to banjo. Another could be playing acoustic bass guitar and then be playing accordion. And yet another could go from drums to ukulele.

It’s been exciting to see and hear the resurgence of what could be defined as indie folk/bluegrass, with bands like The Avett Brothers, Trampled By Turtles, and Old Crow Medicine Show, The Hunts certainly demonstrated that they too can be considered one of the up and comers in this genre as well. Expect to hear more from The Hunts, I know I will.
