75 Bands in 75 Days – Day 3: Hart & Hare

75 - 75

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome, welcome, to day three of 75 Bands in 75 Days, where we bring you the best talent that the Pacific Northwest has to offer, one day and one band at a time. Today, we’re going to the weirdness capital of the world, Portland, Oregon, to share with you one of the best art rock bands their local scene has to offer, Hart & Hare.

Hart & Hare is an artsy musical duo consisting of singers and multi-instrumentalists Jessica Pierson and Graham Bell. Together, the two produce song after song that are very quaint and low-key, but also manage to be very noisy and textured as well, with a lot of reverb thrown on guitars and vocals, as well as several instances of droning, abstract synthesizers that give a lot of these songs a very ominous feel. It’s a sound you could easily label as “folktronica”, and is comparable to acts including Hundred Waters and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone.

Hart & Hare‘s debut album AND ACTION was released in March of 2014, and is 35 minutes of surreal, yet very pleasant art rock. While the album may be a grower for a lot of listeners, those who persevere will find a lot to enjoy in the album’s very dense, strange, yet very cute tracks. The quietness of the record, in combination with the very cold and desolate atmosphere, means that AND ACTION could very easily make for your perfect 2014 winter album, alongside other 2014 albums like Zammuto‘s Anchor and FKA twigs‘ LP1. You can purchase AND ACTION for yourself here.
