50 Bands in 50 Days – Day 16: Ten Miles Wide

50-50 FEATURED

Welcome back to 50 Bands in 50 Days, our annual one-day-at-a-time spotlight of the best talent coming out of the Pacific Northwest, brought to you by GigTown. Today we’re turning you onto one of the finest progressive rock bands out of the northwest, Ten Miles Wide.

Formerly known as The Mothership, Ten Miles Wide is a rock band from Seattle whose music is an eclectic combination of punchy progressive rock, down-and-dirty hard rock, and hard-hitting post-hardcore. When listening to any of their music recorded when they were still The Mothership, you can pick up just as much King Crimson influence as you can bands like The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria. The band mixes the same influences as those other bands in such a way where it all feels natural, with no element swallowing the others.

2014’s  release “Bright Side of Dim” gave The Mothership the audience they’d been looking for and had some people saying this was the best Seattle rock album in a few decades. Now with an audience, the future looked very bright for these shining Seattle stars but as fate would have it, there was yet one more bump on the rock & roll highway for these guys. At the height of their popularity, another great band emerged from Texas with a very similar name. Simply called Mothership except  they didn’t really just emerge, they had a head start on the boys from the northwest. Eventually the painstaking decision to change the band name could no longer be avoided.

So now, with a brand new album coming out soon with the legendary Jack Endino teamed up on the production side of things, The Mothership became Ten Miles Wide. The name Ten Miles Wide stems from the band’s 2011 album of the same name.

Ten Miles Wide is not a band to sleep on. We’re hoping their debut record will be just as much an instant classic as their Mothership material has been and from the samples we’ve heard, we think it will be. Progressive rock fans of the northwest unite!
